School Transfers
As the 2014-2015 school year comes to an end, many students are wondering where they will attend school next year. There are several situations that will require you to get a transfer: moving and no longer being in your school district, being a part of the International Baccalaureate or optional program, or participating in the fine arts program.
However, any student who is interested in transferring must make sure that their prior school records are up to par with the Germantown’s expectations.
“There are certain requirements that a student must meet to transfer to our school. We look at grades, behavior, and attendance,” stated vice principal Nelba Thomas.
Students’ records will be evaluated upon requesting for transfer.
“We have a committee of people here and at the board who make decisions but ultimately it is up to Mrs. Harmon,” said Thomas.
Even though a student may get accepted on a transfer, if they fail to keep up with the required guidelines, their transfer can be revoked without warning.
“Students must also be able to get to school on time and off campus on time and have no conduct issues; if they fail to follow our procedures, then their transfer can be rescinded,” said principal Barbara Harmon.
The administrators collaborate and decide whether a student can attend Germantown or return to their home school.
“Our committee consists of all the administrators. We get together and review all of the students. If we have seen their name repeatedly for negative reasons and if they aren’t making passing grades, that’s when we decide that they will have to go back to their school,” stated Harmon.
There are certain things that the committee looks at and takes into consideration that might work in your favor.
“If a student has been going to Germantown all of their years and they move and they are out of the district but still want to go here, we definitely look at that during the process. Also, if a student has a sibling at Germantown already, then they may get a transfer that way,” said Thomas.
A student may also be accepted for a transfer for academic reasons.
“Students have to go through interview and other special requirements if they plan on being in the IB program or fine Arts those requirements are decided upon that department,” said Thomas.
The student transfer application started in April and ended in May with acceptance letters or rejection letters being mailed during the summer.
