Local Jewels for your Summer Blues
Summer is the freedom almost all students cannot wait for as they count down the days to unlatch the ball and chain from their bound ankles to run out into two months of long dog days. There are summer camps to attend, family time to enjoy, and for some, the privilege of traveling the world. Many places exist to visit for locals where they can enjoy a vacation where you don’t have to travel far.
“I visit the Lenox Mall in Atlanta, maybe go see the Braves play in the past. We are going to Six Flags in May,” said sophomore Alicia Jones. “I’ve taken road trips to Gatlinburg with my friends but not too far; my parents don’t trust us.”
With Atlanta just about 6 hours away, students may not be able to travel alone. Magic Springs Theme Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas is just 3 hours away, which may serve as a better road trip with friends.
Of course, students are within driving distance of one of the largest parks in the United States just a few miles away, Shelby Farms.
The Go Ape Zip Line and Tarzan swings are available. Their website goape.com allows those interested to book in advance
People can also soar across the beautiful Pine Lake that lies in the heart of the local park. Pine Lake also has paddle boating, canoeing, kayaking to enjoy.
Downtown Memphis also provides several activities.
“We usually walk around downtown on Beale Street and watch the street performers or maybe, the Peabody,[and] go there for the Fourth of July. They did open up the new Bass Pro in the Pyramid,” stated sophomore Lydia Barlow.
Inside the New Bass Pro Shop, people can ride the towering glass elevator to a breathtaking view of the urban city of blues 322 feet below. .
Whether it’s a trip to 6 hours or 6 minutes, so much summer fun is to be found.
