Ripped Jeans and leggings have been the latest trends in girls’ fashion. Until this school year, these trends were not permitted and wearing them to school would resort in a trip straight to ISS.
Due to students complaining and constantly asking to wear leggings and ripped jeans, Germantown High decided to bend the rules a little. Of course, with new rules comes restrictions. Girls must wear a long shirt that completely covers their bottom area when they wear leggings. Girls must also wear something under their jeans so skin won’t be visible under holes.
“I love having this new rule. Leggings and yoga pants are always the thing to wear on a lazy day, and I’m happy we are finally allowed to wear them,” stated junior Ashlan Daniels.
Others were also excited about this rule change even if they had to wait a while to see it.
“Everyone was already wearing ripped jeans and leggings I’m just happy that we can wear it now and not get in trouble for it too bad I had to wait until my senior year to see this happen,” said senior Terica Kelly.
Students were not the only ones celebrating. Some teachers agreed with new rule because it has created less trouble for them.
“It’s easy to have this new rule because the girls were wearing it anyway and now you don’t really have to say much about it unless their shirt is too short,” stated criminal justice teacher Collins.
However, some think it’s a hassle.
“There have been some teachers complaining about the rule, and if they are unhappy then, I’m unhappy,” said principal Barbara Harmon.
The problem stems from some students still not following the rule regarding the shirt length.
“If girls don’t start following the rules, then we may just have to go back to the regular Shelby County Schools policy,” stated principal Barbara Harmon.
Ultimately, Germantown has chosen its own rule to help students; it now is up to the students- the girls- to help themselves in keeping it .
