Football preview

With fall football starting back up, many Red Devils wonder how the team will be this year and what the season holds.
“Our goal is to go the playoffs and go to state,” head coach Charlie White said.
Though that is the goal, new challenges present themselves every year.
“We have people playing new positions; youth on the team, a lot of sophomores,” coach Steven Reeder said.
One new face this year is sophomore Wesley Dacus, who is to be the starting quarterback. He hopes that his “mental approach” combined with his “knowledge of the position” will “keep the game going with as few mistakes as possible.” While being on the field for the first time as a Varsity player can be frightening, Dacus does not think it will affect his playing ability.
“I mean I will be nervous, but if you aren’t nervous, then something is definitely wrong,” Dacus said.
In addition to the possible weakness of more youth on the team, White added that “we are kind of inexperienced in our defensive line and our linebacker core.”
Even with the potential weaknesses of the team, both coaches do foresee a bright football season.
“We have three seniors starting who are bigger this year and have gained playing time,” Reeder said.
Both Reeder and White agreed that they have a good group of seniors this year. One of those seniors is running back Matt Hoover who admits that seniors do bring leadership to the team but has also set personal goals for himself.
“I want to score at least five touchdowns, which will happen if Dan blocks,” Hoover added.
But even with good leadership, some things are still hard to overcome.
“One of our biggest challenges will be rebounding when things don’t go our way,” Reeder said.
This being true, Reeder emphasized how the good group of seniors they have this year
can really make a difference on the season by bringing leadership to the table and ultimately helping the team go far.
Overall, the coaches and players have a realistic outlook on the season.
“Henderson or any regional game will be tough,” Reeder said.
But with that being said, they plan to take each Friday night, one game at a time.
“Our toughest opponent is whoever we are playing Friday night,” White said.
