Every year, “The Pitchfork” staff provides questionnaires for senior students, always inquiring about the most influential teacher. This year, a majority of students shared a common response- Coach Martin.
Katie Martin serves as an English IV teacher and also coaches the Red Devil softball team. A former graduate of GHS, she dedicates her time and effort into her job, which has certainly not gone unnoticed.
“I play softball and have spent a lot of time with Coach Martin, and her being a younger teacher/coach and learning how to work with us has been a very emotional time, but she has taught me a lot and I have grown to love her,” senior Quena Johnson said.
With the ability to relate students, Martin also found ways to motivate.
“She knows how to have fun, but when it comes to doing work, she always looks for the absolute best in us because she knows that we can do it,” senior Yasmine Parker stated.
“Coach Martin is constantly pushing us to succeed and work hard every day. What more can you ask from a teacher? I respect Coach Martin and I will never ever forget her,” shared senior Cody Lewis.
While students clearly feel her impact will be felt long after they leave, her life lessons also will take them far.
“Coach Martin always said, ‘Nothing is going to get easier’,” senior Trakeia Ferguson said.
Of course, for anyone who knows Martin best, one thing can always be learned from her.
“She taught me the true art of sarcasm,” senior Jasmine Coleman said.
