The Student Government Association at Germantown High is not just the people who plan fun activities at school. They do much more than that.
SGA started giving candy near Halloween time to the students at Hanley Elementary about 16 years ago. When that project was cancelled, the SGA members knew that they wanted to continue projects like that. So then they came in contact with St. Jude Hospital.
“We have been doing this project for two years now, and it’s when SGA collects candy for the children of St. Jude for Halloween because they aren’t allowed to go trick or treating,” stated SGA sponsor Sylvia Hancock.
This event takes place on October 31, and is a huge day for the kids. For those who are not a part of SGA, Mrs. Hancock will be taking up candy until October 25.
Kids at St. Jude really depend on these kinds of acts because it’s the closest they get to going trick or treating, but the kids aren’t the only ones who benefit.
“These projects are the most fun, and it’s really great seeing the reaction on the kids’ faces,” said senior Wesley Dacus.
This activity also provides a way for students at GHS to become more active.
“I’ve always been involved with St. Jude, and it’s good that I can do something extra at school” said senior Chris Boone.
For those who are willing to donate a bag of candy, there are a couple of rules: NO hard candy, NO peanut products, nothing homemade and all must be individually wrapped.
Many types of candy are accepted: Sweet Tarts, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, 3 Musketeers, Hershey’s chocolate, Twizzlers, Smarties, and many types of suckers. Turn in any donations to Mrs. Hancock by Oct. 25.
