With the deal for the Germantown Municipal Schools set, it is now decision time for parents and students at Germantown High who are city of Germantown residents; they now have the choice to attend Houston High or Germantown High.
On December 16, at the municipal school board meeting, the decision was officially set in stone that Germantown Elementary, Middle, and High would become a part of the Shelby County Unified District, leaving Houston High as the high school for Germantown residents.
With this plan, the school board is allowing students already attending Germantown to stay at Germantown; however, if a student lives in the city of Germantown, he or she is given the choice to attend Houston High the following year.
A survey was conducted asking a variety of students who live in the city of Germantown their plans for next year. The results are listed below:
Grade Germantown High Houston High
Freshman 45 5
Sophomore 47 3
Junior 39 11
One deciding factor for students who have this choice involves the courses offered next year at either school.
“I want to keep my options open, so it depends on who has more AP classes,” freshman Jillian Stewart explained.
Other students are more solid in their decision to stay.
“I plan to stay at Germantown because I grew up here and feel it’s my duty to stay here,” junior Eli Warren said.
Sophomore Tristan Fowler also agreed.
“I hope to go to Germantown because I like the demographics,” stated Fowler. “I enjoy being with my friends here, and I prefer the larger campus.”
Although many students have their own opinion, it’s ultimately the parents’ decision.
“I want to go to Houston next year, but I don’t think my parents will allow me to since I would be driving past Germantown on the way there,” sophomore Phoebe Taylor said.
For eighth graders that are Germantown residents, they will have the option to attend GHS according to the superintendent.
