Have you ever thought about what you could do to make a difference in the world? Little did you know, it is as easy as buying a trendy top. Jeff Steitz and Ryan Westberg have made this possible with their co-founded company Serengetee.
After traveling around the world to a number of third world countries, Steitz and Westberg created their organization to give back to the local artists they had met along the way and the communities that inspired them. Serengetee currently supports thirty-two causes with five percent of each purchase going back to a specific artist. Many of these causes include building schools and aid centers for families who live in artists’ communities and even organizations in the United States such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Serengetee representative and Germantown High junior Olivia Vo is always eager to get the word out about her organization’s story.
”Serengetee’s mission is to spread awareness of global issues by giving back to local communities in different parts of the world,” she said. “I can see the creativity and hard work that is put into each unique design.”
When people buy a Serengetee product, they choose an article of clothing or accessory, and then they choose a pattern that is to be incorporated onto that article, such as a pocket. Each fabric pattern comes from a different artist from around the world.
The process that goes into each purchase makes Serengetee’s mission statement, “Wear the World, Change the World,” all the more real.
Vo recognizes the impact this motto has brought about with the organization's growth.
”With a lot of people buying from Serengetee, that can amount to thousands of dollars to go towards different charities,” she explained.
She also uses her position to do her part and get some cute clothes in the process.
”I love, love, LOVE their crop sweater and 5-panel hat. My favorite fabrics are Palm Beach and Peña Blanca,” Vo said.
Serengetee products stand out and each comes with its own little story.
”The designs are so colorful and trendy, and they also give insight on the culture of the region,” said Vo. “It's a unique clothing brand that you won't find in stores, and with every purchase, you know how you're changing the world.”
