Last week, Justin Timberlake played before a sold out crowd at the Fed Ex Forum, but what led up to this desire to see this hometown star involved his most recent albums.
The tour is meant to be a highlight of Timberlake’s resurgence in the music world with his jaw dropping “Complete Experience,” which Timberlake kicked off just less than a month ago.
In 2007, Justin Timberlake left his fans with what they all thought would be his greatest album of all time, “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” Almost seven years later, he hit the world with not one but two albums in one year: “The 20/20 Experience Parts One and Two.” On March 15, Timberlake released “The 20/20 Experience Part One” which featured songs such as radio hit and gentleman’s anthem “Suit & Tie” featuring Tom Ford wearing Jay-Z. The album is full of catchy love songs directly reflecting his feelings for his new wife Jessica Biel.
“Pusher Love Girl” starts the album off with an intricate, melodic groove and hip-hop breakdown comparing love to a needed and irresistible drug.
“Don’t Hold The Wall” persuades the listener to simply dance and let go of the nights worries with its eccentric drums and producer Timbaland’s vocals lying in the back.
“Strawberry Bubblegum” is a sweet and calming song layered lightly behind a warm, embracing instrumental showing off his clever lyricism.
“Tunnel Vision” explains Timberlake’s inability to focus on anything else whenever she is around; the video is a sure eye opener.
“Spaceship Coupe” takes the listener out of this world with its futuristic and electronic beat as Timberlake invites you into his
“Spaceship Coupe, [where] there’s only room for two,” asking to run away from this world with him and enjoy life.
“That Girl” officially introduces Timberlake’s band “JT and The Tennessee Kids,” as he proclaims his love for “that girl” despite what anyone says with heavy horns and rhythmic guitar giving an old comfy vibe.
“Let The Groove Get In” is yet another club banger which uses a form of chant in the chorus and african samples to produce a drum based beat encouraging the listener to dance.
“Mirrors,” also a radio hit, is a dedication to his grandparents’ long lasting and reflective love.
“Blue Ocean Floor” paints a vivid picture with a subtle, yet intense rhythm reassuring his love that she can find him anywhere as long as she sends her heartbeat through the blue ocean floor. Timberlake wraps the album up with two unexpectedly upbeat and mind ringing songs:
“Dress On featuring Timbaland,” an easy song with electric basses and solid, incorporated vocals, and “Body Count,” which has a flavorful assortment of sounds accompanied by a repetitive hook.
Although Timberlake should have allowed “Blue Ocean Floor” to tie the album together with its calm, quiet sound echoing in the listeners mind, the album overall still gave his fans something they have been waiting for. The album exploits the dynamic duo of Timberlake and Timbaland once again while going that extra mile in sound, length, lyrics, and vocals. Almost every song on the album has a breakdown and practically turns into a new song such as “Pusher Love Girl,” “Strawberry Bubblegum,” and “Spaceship Coupe.” Even after ninety minutes, Timberlake did not let it end there.
Timberlake stunned the world taking a completely different turn September 27 when he released “The 20/20 Experience Part Two.” The album is full of explicit and eccentric lyrics on top of elaborate layered beats.
“Gimme What I Don’t Know I Want” opens the album with a teasing sweet intro and trails into enticing lyrics, electric horn, and crazy animal noises as he begs to let release his inner beast.
“True Blood” builds up to a cryptic, mystical sound and faint howling as Timberlake alludes to a vampire mistress.
Next, Timberlake teams up with Canadian superstar Drake in “Cabaret,” a seductive song urging a late night show.
“TKO” is a fan favorite with its strong, knockout bass as he tells of his total defeat to his love.
“Take Back The Night” is a cute pop club song encouraging the listener to relax and enjoy the night.
“Murder” takes a different turn with unsuspected breakdowns, catchy horns, and creepy lyrics while Jay-Z tops the song off.
“Drink You Away” has an awkward country vibe as Timberlake drowns his sorrows away.
“You Got It On” slows the album down with its hint of sultry lyrics.
“Amnesia” begins with a soft, inviting classical intro and turns into a beatboxing ballad of his forgotten love.
“Only When I Walk Away” goes back to the slight country feel with electric guitar as he tells of his battle with heartbreak. “Not A Bad Thing” brings the album to a close Timberlake reminds the listener that not all his music is meant for dirty dancing with sultry lyrics as he persuades one to let go fall in love with him. The song has a suspenseful pause and turns into a completely new song. “If I Had A Pair Of Wings” is a slow light melody dedicated to his wife as he hopes to spend the rest of his life with her.
“The Complete Experience” is perfectly titled in that it gives the listener a taste of Justin Timberlake in a whole new light-- 164 minutes of pure genius. Part one is a sweet and loving album letting the fans see what marriage has done to him, whereas part two steps into all of JT’s nightlife wonders, desires, and dreams. Justin Timberlake dropping part two in the same year sets him apart from many other artists. The seventy-four minute album shows the fans Timberlake’s wild side, abstract demeanor, and ability to be dynamic in his music. Songs like “True Blood” and “Murder” are not typically anticipated tracks for JT fans.
While the concert might bring together a “complete experience,” just listening to these two albums will come close.
