Beale Street Music Fest Do’s & Don’ts
Beginning on May 1, Beale Street Music Festival officially kicked off the annual Memphis in May celebrations. The three-day music festival took place at Tom Lee Park and hosted an array of musical performers from various genres, bringing in large crowds of people from all over the country. This year’s amazing weather and line up attracted well over 100,000 people in attendance for each day.
Many Germantown High students and faculty also joined in on the festivities, learning the ups and downs of Music Fest.
First time goer and algebra teacher Josh Taylor shared his experiences.
“You must stay hydrated and drinks lots of water and definitely wear sunscreen. Also, the closer you get to the stage, the more squished you become between other people and it gets hot and harder to breathe, so be cautious of your placement and surroundings,” stated Taylor.
With Taylor’s focus more on the physical strain of the festival, one student focused more on another aspect of safety.
“This was [my] third year attending Music Fest and this year was by far the most hectic and fun,” said junior Maria Estrada. “Be sure to go with a group of people you are comfortable with and stay with them. Make sure you plan ahead of time before you get there. Don’t do anything dangerous!”
While considering some obvious dangers, one must also consider the dangers that come along with just wanting to have fun.
Freshman DeMarcus Johnson experienced his second Beale Street Music Fest.
“There’s a lot of daring people out there. I watched multiple kids try to crowd surf and they just ended up hurting themselves and others, so don’t try that. Also, you have to be very aware of everyone else around you; don’t talk to any strangers,” said Johnson.
No matter whether attending next year or attending any concert this summer, these same lessons can help make any music festival and fun and safe experience.
