As the district tournament approaches on May 2, the Red Devil baseball team, according to head coach Casey Callaway, “hopes to shock the world, so to speak.”
“We knew at the beginning of the year we had to win one game, and that comes next week,” Callaway said.
Despite not being satisfied with their current standing, the coach has seen some positives as they move into tournament play.
“[We] have played better as a team of late, building momentum toward the tournament,” Callaway stated.
In order to win, though, some players will need to step up.
One bright spot has been senior pitcher Chris Howell, and their success in the tournament starts with him.
“[He has] the ability to beat anyone on the mound. We just have to play better behind him,” Callaway said.
Other players who have helped guide the way are juniors Landon Horne and Dakota Stone, both working hard and serving as leaders by example.
While the season as Callaway said, “hasn’t turned out like we wanted,” it all could turn around on that one game in the district tournament.
