Germantown’s boys’ track team is full of hard-working athletes who are currently striving for the best.
“Honestly, at the beginning of the year, I just wanted the guys to do their best. I wanted the guys who were capable of going to state to go to state and I wanted everybody else to get better. The boys track team has already surpassed my expectations,” coach Michael Henson said, ” but even some those freshmen have really come through and done more than I ever expected out of them.”
One possibility for the surprise in the team’s performance lies with the makeup of the team.
“We are a young team that has a lot of sophomores, freshmen, a few juniors, and only one senior. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of this season, but the guys have really stepped up and done really good things this year,” Henson stated.
Motivation comes in all different types of ways, and Coach Henson has found the best way that works for the team.
“The way I motivate the guys usually involves lots of push ups, yelling and screaming,” Henson stated.
While the yelling and screaming might appear on the surface to help motivate, Henson tries to coach not only about track but also about life.
“Responsibility is a big thing I wanted to instill in them. First, to be responsible for your own actions, don’t blame anybody else for your actions, and you’re the only one that can control yourself. For my upperclassmen I really wanted to develop leaders out of them,” Henson stated.
Henson’s attempts seem to be working as many track athletes are motivated to succeed on and off the track.
“This season I want to make it to state and run a good time at state. I learned how to run through middle boundaries, work with a team on relay races, and generally run better,” sophomore runner Michael Waldrup stated.
“Personally I want to work hard to be better than the next person, and to go state and win as many races as possible. I learned leadership skills, how to carry the team on, and show a good example,” junior sprinter Luke Mitchell stated.
