Halfway through the season, the baseball team is ready for a strong end.
“There’s been a lot of ups and downs so far, but the good thing about the baseball season is as long as you play well, come playoff time, we’ll make a run at state,” senior Joseph Rodgers said.
The key element to making a playoff run often lies with pitching.
“This year, I think our pitching is a lot better. A lot of our pitchers are more in control. We are walking fewer guys, making teams have to hit to get on base and anytime you do that in high school baseball you’re gonna be pretty good,” junior varsity coach Daniel Ford said.
While holding the opponent to less runs is key, scoring them is what wins the games, and this seems to be a strength for the Red Devils.
“Our offense has honestly been better, which I don’t know if we necessarily could have predicted because we lost a lot of offense last year with Ridge Smith and Trey Keppen graduating. Overall, we’re probably a better offensive team,” Ford said.
Another contribution to their success lies in the team’s experience.
“We haven’t had a player that hasn’t played,” varsity coach Casey Callaway said.
Ford agreed.
“The seniors have really stepped up this year. I think they were kinda overshadowed by a couple of guys in the year ahead of them. Now that they’re the ones that are being relied on, a lot of guys are really rising to the occasion,” Ford added.
Callaway expects for the players to “continue to come together as a team and play hard and enjoy the rest of the season.”
Ford sees a similar future.
“I expect us to continue to pitch the way we’ve been pitching and to hit the way we’ve been hitting. I don’t think those are flukes, I think we are a good team in those respects,” Ford said.
