At Germantown High, students are given the power to make their school better and more exciting to attend with a hand full of fun and charitable events through SGA, the Student Government Association.
The organization stages six different kinds of events and charity programs a year: Homecoming/Winterfest, Prom, Pep rallies, Angel Tree, LifeBlood, and Make-A-Wish.
Though better known for the first few events, the last ones allow students to a chance to make changes beyond the school. Angel Tree is a nonprofit organization that gives Christmas gifts to the Salvation Army and allows the less fortunate to have a merry Christmas as well. LifeBlood, a blood donation center, comes to Germantown High and gives the option for students to donate blood that could potentially save someone’s life. Make-a-Wish, also nonprofit, is an organization that raises money to grant wishes to children with life-threatening diseases. S.G.A. sets up the events and raises money for the charities.
SGA president and senior Jona Ligon’s job is to make sure all events are running smoothly but realizes more can be done to involve all.
“We’re trying to make things more fun that everyone can do,” said Ligon.
There are many ways for students to get more involved with S.G.A. like joining the S.G.A. itself and taking part in their events.
