Head coach Katie Martin will take her team into the district tournament today proud of what her team has accomplished so far.
Most impressive to her is how her girls have “learned to compete and stay in these ball games with these bigger and stronger teams,” according to Martin.
A key reason to the team’s increased success lies with freshman Elizabeth Laboe, shortstop on the team who currently has six home runs on the season, four of which were hit in the last regular season game against Wooddale. Already a leader and extremely coachable, Laboe is considered by Martin as one of the top players in the county.
“She knows the game. She thinks three steps ahead…and you can’t teach that,” Martin said.
Senior Quena Johnson, known as “Q,” has also helped contribute to the improvement of the team this year.
Having pitched every game, “Q’s done a phenomenal job. She’s worked hard every day to improve,” added Martin.
As the third seed entering the tournament today, Martin looks more to the future. With such a young team, still with two or three years left to learn, the Lady Red Devil softball team looks to great things in the future.
