With a tuba and a tenor saxophone, Alex Franklin and Randy Harris took the stage to compete in Germantown's annual Larry Hall Memorial Talent Show.
After competing in last year's talent show, The Crew's loss drove them to come back bigger and better this year. However, they lost a few members along the way.
"Our original group was called ‘The Crew’, but we split up due to dire circumstances. This year we stayed split, but competed against our former group members. They are now called ‘Bonded’," said Franklin.
After further clarification from Jaske Goff II, one of the two members of ‘Bonded’ and a member of the original group ‘The Crew,’ ‘Bonded’ was determined to be only a temporary duo. Though happy at his friends’ achievement, he also expressed his disbelief of The Crew’s win.
“I was shocked, to tell the truth. I had believed our [Bonded’s] performance to be a compilation of all skills used in the whole show simultaneously. But my guys really showed out. So all is good,” said Goff.
The Crew had only rehearsed four hours prior to the show and managed to not only flawlessly execute Michael Jackson's "I Want You Back" and the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," but also win the competition.
“After last year’s lost, it felt really good to come back and win,” said Franklin.
Harris also conveyed his happiness for the win.
“There was a lot of good competition, but I’m glad that we won,” said Harris.
Both Harris and Franklin have been playing for seven years and plan to continue playing in their college bands.
"I plan to play for the LSU band when I go there," said Franklin.
Harris has yet to decide what college he will attend, but plans on being in the band.
“I’m going to play for my college band. I don’t know where I’m going yet,” said Harris.
