Big changes are occurring everywhere at Germantown High, and the sports sector is one.
All heads turned this year when the freshman basketball team changed leadership. Assistant coach Jason True was promoted to head coach after only three years in his position. With former head coach leaving behind a tremendous record of six out of ten championship wins, True was left in a difficult spot with large shoes to fill. Still, he was seemingly prepared for the transition.
“It’s been pretty smooth overall. Definitely more responsibility taking on a higher leadership… I knew a large majority of the team before the season because of the summer league,” said True.
So far, True is holding the legacy of the freshman team together with only one loss for the season leaving them with a record 19-1. The team also won the Houston Holiday Classic over the winter break. Having such a great report with the students from previous years, even students who did not play in the summer league are enjoying their experience.
“The season and the team have been pretty good. I am very comfortable where I am and the team we have put together. We could go on be undefeated next year,” freshman Tyran Davis said.
True is holding up fairly well with his first year as head coach of the freshman team. He also attributes a lot of his work to former head coach Crump, and varsity coach Davis.
Seniors Justin Greene even spoke on the difference they have seen since their freshman year, which was also True’s first year at Germantown.
“He puts a lot more into the players and he gives it his all. Now that he’s a head coach, he really shows his players love and would do anything for them,” senior Justin Greene said.
Other seniors seem to agree.
“Overall, his leadership and how he handles his team is a lot differently. Being a head coach, he has had to do things a lot differently versus when you’re an assistant coach and just have to follow your head coach. He does everything his way and handles his team accordingly,” senior Chris Echols said.
Hopefully the team can keep up the hard work as they make their way to state. Their next game will be during the freshman tournament at Bartlett.
