With over 75% of the graduating class reporting their next step after graduation is to attend a four-year university, most neglect to look at those exploring other routes than the typical one.
Senior Josh Blocker is choosing to enter the Air Force rather than college. For a sense of stability and the financial help, Blocker’s decision also stems from beyond his family.
“[It will] build me up for what I want to do in the future,” Blocker said.
Hoping to later become a physical therapist and possibly open his own business later on, Blocker’s journey there through the Air Force begins September 22.
Other seniors Tahirah Harris and Tyler Bradley are opting for the Armed Services as well, selecting the Marines and Navy respectively.
Harris’s motives stem from a desire for more discipline and the benefits; Bradley’s motivation is to help him attend school later on.
With the new initiative Tennessee Promise, chances are the rise in number of students attending two-year colleges will increase. One student who will take this community college route is senior Chris Morris who will attend Southwest Community College in the fall. After completion, Morris plans to join the Memphis Police Department.
With other options available, one student chose a route distinct from others. Senior TaDerrius Tipton plans on attending a dental hygienist school after moving to Texas this summer. His motivation for this route seems pretty clear and in some ways is what should drive most to the next step in a career.
“I like teeth,” Tipton said.
