Preparing for college senior year is one of the most stressful times in life with all of the college applications, ACT or SAT, and staying on track of your high school work.
According to the American College Health Association, “Academic stress can be the ultimate career stopper and the key to avoid academic stress is to treat it at its source.”
“I just try to stay motivated and organized because it is easy to get discouraged when you aren’t on top of things,” stated senior Mauricus Murdock.
It may be even more stressful for those who are getting ready for college without the help of a parent.
“I’m very independent when it comes to college applications because I live with my grandparents, and they really don’t know much about applying college,” said senior Barbara Thompson.
Maintaining good grades in the first semester of senior year is a vital part in acceptance to college, showing colleges one is academically ready.
“My high school work is more important to me right now just so I can make sure I keep my GPA up,” said senior Kaylin Dabney.
Having someone to help guide through the college process is a major stress reliever because one does not feel like he or she is doing it alone.
“We sit down and go through the applications together and we’ve been visiting schools. When applying for scholarships we mark them off on the calendar and we make sure to do the ones with the closer dates first,” stated senior parent Karen Daniels.
College applications can become more and more strenuous depending on the college. Most common apps do not require essays or recommendations but on the ones that do can be a task to complete.
“The most stressful part of college applications is having to do a resume and get recommendations because you have to manage your time well and give people enough time to make your letter of recommendation,” said senior Alana Branch.
Another major stress in applying for college is meeting all the criteria such as your ACT score. Seniors get discouraged when they have taken the ACT several times and are still unsatisfied with their score or if he or she doesn’t meet the score for the college they want to attend. In the city of Memphis there are always ACT prep classes being offered. There are classes offered at Southwest Community College, East High School, Rhodes College, University of Memphis, etc.
Seniors have different ways to get away from the pressure of thinking about college.
“When I’m overwhelmed for college, I just take a break and hang out with friends and then regroup,” said senior Ashlan Daniels.
Some seniors also like to take naps because when they feel refreshed and rejuvenated.
There’s no way of getting out of being stressed for college so dealing with the stress in a positive way makes it easier to stay motivated. Also having the support of others and ways to relieve stress makes the whole process easier.
