It is officially October, and when most people think of October, they think of fall and Halloween, of course.
Halloween has origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. This festival’s purpose was to celebrate the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. The Gaels believe that on October 31, the lines of the living world and dead overlapped. Believing that the dead would come back to life and cause havoc. People of this time wore masks and costumes to mimic or appease evil spirits.
Although the original Halloween does not sound so fun, the present day Halloween traditions like trick or treating and costumes come from the original practices of Halloween.
Here at Germantown High one student believes this is the best holiday for all ages.
“Halloween is a day where everyone can be a kid,” stated senior India Tate.
Younger children tend to go trick or treating or attend harvest parties. At school they may complete arts and crafts like making popcorn balls, paper ghosts and craving jack-o’-lanterns. Halloween is a little limited for children but there are endless options for teens.
Many teens attend the haunted corn maze located at the Agricenter from noon to 10 pm, Halloween parties, and maybe trick or treating. But some people may want to avoid the crowds so they stay home and watch Halloween movies.
A new festivity is the Wicked Ways haunted house. It is known to be the scariest haunted house in the mid-south! They’re open on Halloween from 7p.m. – 1a.m. if you’re up for a scare.
Whether you’re spending Halloween at home watching movies or out and about participating in the many festivities, just make sure you enjoy this fun filled holiday.
