With only one four-year player remaining on the team, the GHS 2014 softball team has practically started from scratch.
“It has been a learning season. The girls have done a good job learning the game and adjusting to new positions,” stated coach Katie Martin.
While learning the game and new positions, freshman players Savannah Cici and Hannah Huffman both agree that this season has also helped them socially.
“I’ve never played an actual sport, so I’ve learned how to work well with a team,” said Cici.
Being a team with so many new players, the coach finds a few obstacles in achieving instant success .
“Our biggest challenge is how young we are. We’ve had to teach a lot of girls how to play the game, so being so young, we lack experience,” stated Martin.
For Huffman, her biggest challenge has been learning how to bat, adjusting to faster pitching.
Mei Ray, a four-year senior, identified one problem that comes with inexperience.
“Our biggest challenge as a team has been not getting down on ourselves. When we make a mistake, it’s hard for us to move on, but I think we’re getting better at picking ourselves back up after we make a mistake,” stated Ray.
Although they are new to the game, this young group has helped to contribute to the team’s success.
“The freshman class has brought in a lot of hits. They’ve really stepped up and have learned the game and new positions rather quickly,” stated Martin.
