Down, set, hut! Football season has started at Germantown High. With a record of two wins and two losses, the rest of the season may seem bleak, but coaches and players are optimistic about the rest of the season.
“I expect to win every game,” stated assistant coach Steven Reeder. “There’s not a team on [the rest of] the schedule that we can’t beat.”
Players also remain optimistic and are excited about the way they hope the rest of the season will play out.
“I think we haven’t been playing to our full potential, [but] we’re getting there. We’re getting better,” said senior quarterback Wesley Dacus.
Based on the past three games, one positive has stood out.
“I’m really pleased with the way we’re playing defense,” said head coach Charles White.
Senior Joseph Rodgers agrees.
“[The defense] is the strength of our team,” said Rodgers.
Though defensively the Red Devils have succeeded, some improvements are still needed.
“Offensively we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to be able to score more points,” White said.
To help improve the offensive output, Reeder and the other coaches have implemented clear plans.
“We have been improving running plays, knowing where we’re going,” said Reeder.
Teamwork on the field isn’t the only thing keeping the team going. Off the field the team has been spending time together improving team chemistry altogether.
“This is the closet the team’s ever been,” Rodgers said.
He added that they have a team dinner every Wednesday, and seniors have their own dinner every Thursday.
“It really is kinda like a family environment being around them for so long,” said Dacus. “We really enjoy each other, so we spend as much time as we can together.”
Another exciting thing for the GHS Red Devils is the student and fan support this year.
“I am pleasantly surprised at the amount of students that have come to the games and hope that is continues despite who we play,” Reeder said.
Everyone agrees this has been a positive season so far despite losses.
“[It’s a] hard-working group of kids,” said White. “They’ve got good attitudes about practice, and they just go out there to get better each day.”
Tonight the team takes on Houston at home, so come out and support your 2013 Red Devil football team. Be there, wear red!
