Graduation day is approaching quickly for GHS seniors. When most think about their dream college it is usually schools such as UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga, Tennessee State University, or Middle Tennessee State University. However, numerous amounts of different colleges have a lot to offer but these smaller schools are often overlooked.
According to The College Board, big schools offer a wide variety of majors and courses, variety of housing opportunities, well-funded sports programs, a wide range of academic choices and student activities, and state-of-the-art research facilities.
However, according to the same source, little schools can provide small class sizes, hands-on learning opportunities, individually designed majors, a strong sense of community, and closer relationships to professors.
Picking a college is a gamble because you have to really think about your needs and which learning setting will be the most beneficial to you.
“I think it depends on the student that determines whether they would be fit for a smaller college or a bigger one. Some students can do well in college without that one on one with their teachers; however, everyone might not learn as well that way,” said Criminal Justice teacher Michael Collins.
Some students determine their college because they would like to stay in their comfort zone and what they are used to.
“I plan on attending University of Memphis and I prefer to go to a bigger school to meet new people and you’ll get to see new faces everyday, which is why I like attending Germantown. You will also be able to network and that can help you out a lot in the future. I also did not want to go too far and I wanted to stay in a familiar place,” said senior Olivia Cratin.
Others plan on branching out more and changing their surroundings with a smaller environment.
“I plan on attending Mississippi College because I signed to play soccer there. I prefer attending a smaller college over a bigger college because it’s more intimate and you can get to know teachers and people on a more personal level because the classes will be smaller,” stated senior Elizabeth Wisdom.
Either way, weighing these options should be a major factor in making that final decision that can decide one’s future.
