Imagine being in a new place surrounded by hundreds of strangers.
Since the start of the 2014-2015 school year, Germantown High has received more and more new students from different states.
For senior Xavier Claus, Germantown was a new beginning. Claus recently moved to Memphis at the beginning of the summer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He started Germantown on Aug. 21, 2014.
Although moving to a different state was tough, starting at a new school proved to be not so bad.
“I adjusted really well to the school all the other students have been helping me find all my classrooms but I’ve gotten the hang of it quickly,” stated Claus.
However, other aspects of Germantown High took time to settle into.
“It really shocked me at first how short the lunch periods are,” said Claus. “I felt rushed to eat all my food.”
While Claus experienced Germantown High for the first time, junior Hayley Walsh was settling in to her second week here.
Walsh transferred from Ridgeway High to Germantown in order to be in the International Baccalaureate program.
“Ridgeway’s IB program was really small compared to GHS. Some of the classes they offered were only one year and here, they are two,” explained Walsh.
Her choice to switch schools turned out to be the right one when comparing.
“Germantown’s IB film production program is great; all the people are excited that I’m here and that makes me excited!” stated Walsh.
But Walsh still faced one of the toughest components of being a new student.
“The hardest thing is trying to make new friends in your junior year, especially when most of these kids have known each other since elementary and middle school,” said Walsh.
